Match colors mix materials. Having a tough time deciding among tiles? Live with them for a while. Tape color and tile samples to the walls to see what they look like throughout the day as natural light changes suggests Stephen Kahn president of Anchor Bay Tile in Phoenix Ariz. Choose one main color and a couple of accent colors to use throughout the kitchen including the backsplash.
Once you ve decided on the material you ll use for your small kitchen backsplash it s time to determine how much of it you ll need. To do so simply measure the surface area you re looking to cover. This can be anything from the entire wall space between the countertops and cabinets a smaller portion thereof or for a truly grand design the entire wall space between your countertops and ceiling.
This is another fun option that I just tried in my own kitchen: a basket backsplash. My love of baskets meant that I had quite a few extra ones lying around from all my flea market/thrift store shopping. So I decided to choose a fun mix of sizes and styles and simply nail them to the backsplash area of my kitchen wall. (I made sure to leave easy access to outlets/light switches.) If I ever want to switch things up or take it down altogether these are also easy to remove.
Wood is another fairly inexpensive option for your backsplash. This really brings in a warm rustic feel to your kitchen. This option would work best in a space that doesn t already have wood or laminate floors but you could really get creative with the type of wood as well as the placement of the wood (vertical horizontal or even a zigzag placement).
Try mixing metallic tiles in different shades with various finishes such as brushed stainless steel oil-rubbed bronze or even an antique brass. By including small tiles of marble or granite you can pull in the countertop color without being boring with a panel of granite that extends up from the countertop says Barrie Spang interior designer at Lee Meier Interiors in Westlake Ohio. As for glass tiles check out some of the newer tiles with a bit of crackle or frosted finish Spang says.
If artistic expression doesn t line up with your idea of a cool backsplash you may want to consider some non-traditional materials or even traditional ones in unique textures and colors. For example stainless steel copper and tin backsplashes can be found in colors and patterns that can lend a truly stunning visual aspect to any kitchen design. Granite or even ceramic tile can be scored manipulated and colored to your exact specifications via tile specialty retailers. And some homeowners even opt for wood backsplashes which can of course be stained and painted to reflect exactly the right amount of cool to suit your style.
