Breaking Bad is Back...

...Which means Breaking Bad reviews are back, even with the absence of Lyle.  I'm sure that will piss plenty of you off, but many of you will be happy to welcome their return, just like we welcomed the return of the show itself.  For those who complain about the Breaking Bad reviews I will reiterate what has been said for a couple of years now:  start watching the show.

For starters, how awesome was that opening scene complete with Walt with a full head of hair, fake ID, stack of cash and a semi- automatic weapon in the trunk of a strange car?  Pretty intense start to the season if you ask me.  Instead of me giving some half-assed review I'll leave the readers with a few question of my own for discussion, and of course feel free to bring up anything else you observed while viewing.  Of course after one episode it's purely speculation from all of us, but let's have some fun with it.  For starters, why is Walt concealing his identity and is he still in ABQ in the opening scene?  Anybody else think the magnet ploy/getaway was a bit farfetched?  Was Gus Fring really dumb enough to videotape his meth cooks?  Doesn't seem like he would make that kind of mistake for a careful guy.  Finally, there's an inevitable Walt/Someone showdown in the end.  Who is it with?

Just started watching it Sunday. On episode 5, season 1. I will have to say it's not quite what I was expecting. Man those people are fucked up.

Few things I either noticed, or found on the interwebs from reading review/boards. (Yes I'm a Breaking Bad nerd)

Opening Scene:

Walt wasn't wearing his wedding ring... even when he signed his divorce papers in season 3 he never took his wedding ring off.

The Denny's waitress said thank you Mr. Lambert. Lambert is Skyler's maiden name in the show.

Walt was turning 52. He turned 50 in the pilot episode of the first season when Skyler makes a similar bacon 50 on his breakfast plate, only hers was turkey bacon. Judging that only about a year has gone by in the first 4 seasons of the show, this tells us that over a whole year has passed from this scene and the current time Walt and everyone else in the show is in.

This could be a big one. When Walt opens the trunk he's got and M60 in the trunk and cases of tracer rounds. Now I knew tracer rounds were used in the military and for personal use to better track your bullet patterns. And the guy who sold him the gun could have very well gave him tracer rounds knowing he was a terrible shot and would need all the help he could get aiming that massive gun. But, the last line on wikipedia about tracer rounds "Tracer rounds may also ignite flammable substances on contact from a nominal distance." at least has to make you think. Perhaps he's not ready to go scarface in an all out war, but is perhaps planning something a little more explosive <<< see what I did there.

Overall great start. Since the season is going to be split into two 8 episode parts, I have a feeling this whole opening scene is going to come to fruition at the end of the first 8 episodes, but that's just a guess.

I started watching last year on Net Flix thanks to Spit Blood reviews. Had to pay Itunes for last season. Have turned many people on to the show. They all do the same thing. Stay up till 3 in the morning until they watch all the episodes.

I wondered about the computer at then end of last season.

Walt is so dark now. Wow he has completely broken bad.

My prediction:

Walt/Jesse/Mike will set up shop with a new cartel in Mexico and run the lab still in existence on the other side of the border.

The accounts number found in the frame will somehow lead Hank to Walt.

Mike or Hank will be the end of Walt.

Oh yes and my theory for how the show will end. Walt doesn't die. His whole purpose for starting this thing was to save his family when he's gone. Sadly I think something terrible happens to his family and anyone close to him and Walt is the last one left to sit and see how his actions created this monster of a situation which is completely 180 degrees from what he planned on happening.

Highly recommend the Sepinwall recaps for the BB fiends out there. He has a lot of access to Gilligan and the cast and offers far more than just "this is what happened". P1's may have heard Sturm reference these. Here is his write-up for Sunday night's episode. http://www.hitfix.com//whats-alan-watching/season-premiere-review-breaking-bad-live-free-or-die-magnet-and-steel

I too found the magnet thing a bit absurd. Hijinks comes to mind.

If you are just starting the series with this season you are doing yourself a huge disservice. Go back and do it all.

To quote a great American: "You have no frame of reference here, Donny. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie..."

I like it how Walt, Skylar, Saul and the guy at the junkyard were all on Seinfeld.

It's amazing how many famous people and character actors were on Seinfeld. Jigsaw from the Saw movies, Tina Fey, etc. The list is staggering.

Regarding the inevitable showdown the opening alludes to, I've thought for a couple seasons now that Jesse is going to be the one that ices Walt in the end.
