The Lobos come to Fort Worth sporting a 12-3 conference record, one game better than the Frogs' 11-4. Both teams still have six games remaining on their conference slate, but each has a 5-1 record against the teams they still have to play- meaning that the Frogs need to take this weekend's series to give themselves a decent shot at winning a 7th consecutive regular-season MWC title.
It was New Mexico's 2-1 series win in Albuquerque in late March that constitutes the difference between these two teams in the standings. In that series, the Lobos- who bat .318 as a team for the season- were even more dangerous at the plate, producing 25 runs on 41 hits (a .363 average for the weekend). Andrew Mitchell (4 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings) and Stefan Crichton (4 runs on 5 hits in 2⅓ innings) each had one of their worst starts of the season. They will need to rebound this weekend.
