The latest hiccup in the Frogs' bid to return to Omaha has been the health of their three elite starting pitchers- Kyle Winkler, Matt Purke and Steven Maxwell. All of them have missed significant time late in the season, and their collective status for the NCAA Regionals (and perhaps beyond) is not widely known right now. While some of the younger guys have stepped up in their absence, TCU's chances of reaching or surpassing the heights of the 2010 team hinge on their availability.
With a difficult road out of the first weekend of the tournament that would have to include beating a tough #4 seed in Oral Roberts and finding some redemption against OU and/or Dallas Baptist, who pitches when for the Frogs is a major concern. As he's done all season long, David Peterson of hornedfrogsports.com has the breakdown of how this weekend might look on the pitching mound for TCU.
-Within minutes of my post, Stefan Stevenson of the Star-Telegram announced via his twitter feed (@FollowtheFrogs) that freshman Andrew Mitchell will be on the mound Friday night against Oral Roberts. Winkler and Purke are both expected to start as well this weekend, but when & against whom will depend on the outcome of the games. Reading between the lines...looks like no Maxwell this weekend.
