While the football team was out in California making history, Jim Christian's basketball Frogs were limping to the end of their non-conference schedule with back-to-back losses against Rice and Tulsa and a 9-6 overall record. Guards Hank Thorns and Tuffy Moss were both hurt during that stretch, and Moss' status (with a concussion) is not known going forward.
They start their second-to-last Mountain West season tonight, when undefeated and sixth-ranked San Diego State visits Fort Worth. The Aztecs are the first Top 10 team to come to Daniel-Meyer since #1 Kansas in 2003, and have made the media who picked them first in the league preseason look smart. The Frogs, who many thought could be the surprise team in the MWC this year, may have that tag taken from them by Colorado State, writes Diamond Leung of ESPN.
As of now, ESPN's Joe Lunardi sees three MWC schools making the tournament (SDSU, BYU and UNLV), along with ten Big East teams- further illustrating the importance of progress being made before the conference switch. Southern Cal, whom TCU beat by double-digits earlier this season, is also picked to make the field of 68- so there is some promise for this team.
