A Done Deal?

BYU going independent? I guess if that's what God tells them to do...

The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that BYU leaving the MWC is pretty much a done deal. If so, BYU fans can forget about any civil treatment from Section V when they come to Amon Carter on October 16.

SWEET! byu gets to play....utah state...and WAC teams...and MWC loses a shot at AQ status. wow. thanks cougars, for absolutely nothing. they won't break even for 10 years, and that's if they can get a decent schedule and a good bowl.

I don't see how this is going to actually help BYU football... sure they'd be free to go wherever, whenever but who is going to schedule a mid to late season game in Provo with a non-con that has just enough ability to completely tank your season? For that matter, who's going to want to play BYU late in the season anywhere? They aren't a bad team by any means, but let's face it, they aren't TCU, Boise St. or even Utah. These guys have just enough ability to make themselves too dangerous to schedule. They are probably better than Notre Dame at the moment, but Notre Dame has an NBC contract and a lot more prestige. BYUTV is not going to be a major draw to anybody that regularly plays on a real channel. And they can forget about BCS consideration...
Maybe this really is about spreading their religion, but that's not going to help their cause... good luck trying to play an SEC team where the fan base isn't particularly tolerant of anything not resembling good old fashioned Jesus lovin'. Who the hell is gonna want to play a team that makes it pretty clear they are really more interested in increasing sales on special underwear?
So, I guess once again, TCU is gonna get screwed which usually just serves to make us stronger. Meanwhile, Boise St. may be feeling the same and it'd be pretty funny if we kind of became this weird tag-team duo despite disliking each other.

Oh there WILL be hate speech when byu comes to our stadium. I will be very highly intoxicated on riotpunch and will probably be ashamed with the things that spew out of my mouth

I refuse to believe that just because BYU is predominately LDS school and is owned by LDS, that it is the pride and joy of LDS community. That would be like me saying because I am Methodist, I am huge SMU fan. Even a step further.. because I am Methodist, SMU deserves its own sports network.

BYU you really aren't "The Shit" despite what you've talked yourself into believing.

You've got to love these guys! Joseph Smith came to them in a vision and told them to re-read the golden tablets, and after consuming mass quantities of jimson weed and appropriate cactus buds, the powers to be read this, ".... and lo! It was written "When the blue horse comes to the mountain, thou shalt pack thine house, thine family and animals and go to the wilderness. In thy solitude, thou wilst never lose another conference championship."

I guess they will become the Notre Dame of Never Never Land.

Who ever won my BYU tickets in the golf tourney last weekend please contact me before the game so we can work on channeling my anger.

The last sentence in that paragraph about Boise possibly backing out terrifies me. Fuck it, let's get Houston and SMU and just go with it.

yeah, if BSU leaves, we're up shit creek with no canoe. who would have thought they would be our only friend on the block? this could conceivably be the end of the MWC if we can't fill their spot. i say we let them use their BYU TV for home games and every stays happy.

I've had the same thought about Boise... at this point, why should they even bother. All things considered, they'd probably be better off running the WAC table every year and going undefeated than having to fight with TCU every year. Although, this could also work the same way for TCU as well. It would actually be ironic if TCU and Boise both ended up as perennial undefeated teams while Utah and BYU, because of their moves, never could quite get there.

...although, Boise might still have more $$$ with the MTN and I'm guessing that BYU picked the WAC for their other sports so they wouldn't have to compete with a conference TV station. Could cause problems with future WAC TV negotiating.

Just a theory mind you - but i think BYU did this to make sure they get invited to join the big 12 once the big 12 figures out that 10 teams is not what it is cracked up to be. BYU will be an attractive team in terms of attendence and location etc... and no conference ties. again, just a theory.

John Lamberth said...

That may be, but I don't think the BigUTwelve goes for it... Texas has shown that they rule those remaining teams and they like a 10 team, no championship, winner take all scenario. Plus they got rid of one of their biggest rivals in Nebraska. Why would UT do ANYTHING at this point except go Independent as well?
Besides, if part of this is about BYUTV, does anybody really thing UT would allow another team with its own channel into the Conference?

I think the stadium renovation plans were unvailed yesterday to keep donors from trying to pull their money after this news....

I just don't understand the BYU Big 12 scenario. My understanding of the rules are that by Sept 1 of 2010 you have to declare your affiliation for 2011. As of now the Big 12 will have 10 teams for '11, if BYU goes independent then they are independent for '11 which is presumably when the Big 12 would want to add them. I get the no strings attached to a conference thing but the MWC doesn't have a buyout, Craig Thompson made they very clear this summer.

Big 12 was just a theory... it cleary contains some flaws but good to see some chatter. hope Boise doesnt back out... would be worst case scenario

Spit Purple said...

If Boise backs out I'm not really sure where we go. If they back out before 9/1/10 that would leave the MWC with less than 8 teams. 8 teams is the minimum allowed to be an FBS conference.

John Lamberth said...

What about a flip flop... Boise stays in the WAC and the WAC picks up TCU and say Air Force? The rest of the MWC can't say much since it was their founding fathers that destroyed the conference

I also find it odd that no one has mentioned what happens to them in regards to the BCS. It seems highly unlikely to me that they get the ND treatment and much more likely that they get the Navy/Army deal. That deal? You have to finish in the top two of the final BCS standings to be assured a sport in a BCS bowl. So, have fun with that LDS
