Utah and Colorado to the Pac-10?

From the ESPN Rumor Mill:

Utah might be headed to the Pac-10. A report from ABC4 in Salt Lake City says Utah will be invited to the Pac-10 conference, while BYU was left out of the guest list.

But there's a long way to go before any of this happens. The Pac-10 has to first decide that they are expanding, like the Big Ten. Then they might invite two schools to their conference to allow for a conference championship and a better scheduling format. ABC4 speculates that Utah and Colorado might be the two additions.

The TV station adds: "The Pac-10 TV deal is about to expire, and a new TV partner would want the league to have a football championship game, which requires the league to have 12 teams."

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott told the San Jose Mercury News that he'll be "very cautious" with expansion. "It?s always tempting to go for short-term economic gain, but it?s very hard to go backwards. You run the risk of potentially harming something that is so special."

Interesting. Pac-10 + UU and CU, combined with Big Televen + Mizzou or Iowa State leaves the Big 12 scrambling. Gotta figure that when faced with a credibility crisis like that, the Big 12 eats crow and takes the two best teams that make any sense, namely BYU and TCU. MWC remainder then raids the WAC just to get back to where they were before Urban Meyer came to Utah. Does anyone remember this much offseason realignment chatter in recent memory?

BYU and TCU in the Big 12 North automatically makes that division competitive again.

All of this is just speculation at this point, but I'll play along...

Utah/Colorado to the Pac 10 could be either really good or really bad for TCU:

-It's good if it's coupled with Missouri going to the Big Ten. In that case, the Big 12 would be down two schools and, like Will said above, BYU and TCU make the most sense. The Frogs in the Big 12 North...like taking candy from a big, fat, pale, jean shorts-wearing, "pop"-saying baby.

-It's bad if Colorado were to be the only team leaving the Big 12. In that case, I can see them choosing BYU instead of TCU. Without Utah and BYU, the MWC would not be an ideal situation for the Frogs, even if Boise were added.

This recent rash of realignment talk is very reminiscent of what was going on in 2001-2003, when rumors like this were pretty rampant.

Colorado would never leave the Big 12. They are part of the original Big 8 and have little fan interest on the west coast.

I see the pac 10 adding Fresno and not Colorado or Utah and BYU. I hope this is just a rumor

Well I mean I agree with Matt. Colorado is not leaving the Big 12. I see them asking Fresno instead,

Colorado is one of the few big 12 teams I actually like. I would like them to stay.

I agree with Lyle... conference realignments could once again be bad for the Frogs. Besides having excellent football, baseball, womens's basketball, etc. our strength lies in another conference's interest in the DFW market and Texas recruiting. The Big 12 will most likely add a program that brings in a new TV market. We don't do that. I hope we don't get left in a MWC that has lost Utah and BYU in a realignment raid. I still believe TCU brings something to the table for the PAC 10. Sounds crazy, but I believe its true.

I'm not sure Utah would leave the MWC without BYU... if they did, you can bet your arse that Utah-BYU would be an annual non-conference game. Still, I'm not sure that these teams would give up the Conference Rivalry.
I doubt Colorado leaves either, although they might figure they have a better chance of jump starting recruiting by gaining regular exposure to California and just give up on trying to get Texas recruits.

Dallas Morning News Article:

The Pac-10 isn't about to let the Big Ten, the conference's longtime
Rose Bowl partner, have all the fun when it comes to expansion.

"Realistically, if we are going to consider this in the forseeable
future, it really is in the next 12 months,'' Pac-10 commissioner
Larry Scott told reporters on a teleconference today.

Scott's hiring of former Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg as deputy
commissioner indicates serious thoughts of expansion and a possible TV
network, given Weiberg's background.

Already, rumors are starting to percolate. One, given life by a Salt
Lake City TV station, has Utah and Colorado headed to the expanded
Pac-10, with BYU as a replacement for Colorado in the Big 12. Expect
more variations on that theme. We'll see if any actually come to pass.

Colorado actually has a HUGE west coast presence. Quite a few (don't have an actual number) kids from California go to CU.

I see it shaking out like this -

1. UU and CU to the Pac 12.
2. Mizzou and Iowa State to Big Televen
3. BYU and Arkie to Big 12

Aaaaaaand............TCU to the SEC.

Call me a pessimist, but I don't think a conference rivalry would keep Utah or BYU from jumping to a BCS conference... In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm a realist on that point.
