The Star-Telegram ran a story in the past few days about statues at sporting venues and in the article, mentioned the complete lack of sports statues on TCU's campus. Of course, acknowledgment probably isn't news to you. But I bet you thought the same thing to yourself that I did after reading that- "I bet there'll be some statues once they re-do the stadium".So when is this long-talked about renovation of Amon G. Carter Stadium actually going to happen? As of now, the school hasn't released any kind of official plan or concrete timeline for the project.
Until we hear something of substance on the issue from the athletic department, I want you the Spitblood reader to pretend you're on whatever committee is in charge of such things. So, in the comments section, let me know:
-What features you would like to see on the "new" Amon G.
-How large you would like seating capacity to be.
-When you would like to see ground be broken on the project.
-Who would be honored with a statue, and where would they be.
-How much money you would personally donate to the cause.
21 comments:
1. New suites where overhang is.(already in plans).
2. 40,000
3. After 2010 season.
4. A walk of Legends. LT, Davey, Sammy, Lilly, others in NFL HOF. Dutch Meyer, and eventually Patterson.
5. $5,000,000
- Suite seating would be nice. Also open up the North endzone entrance. Also have banners or something for our team achievements and player achievements
-45-50k
-ASAP for ground breaking
-Statues would be reserved for the legends. Meyer, O'Brien, LT, Baugh, Lilly, Patterson, possibly Hughes.
-I would tithe the usual 10%
1. Shrink upper deck, put endzone seats closer to field of play to increase noise, PA guy who can pronounce player's names properly.
2. 42K
3. ASAP
4. Same players as Buck-put the statues around Frog Alley instead of goofy shit everywhere.
5. I'll fund the whole thing as soon as my jump to conclusions mat goes into production.
I agree about closing the endzones in to increase noise. I'd like capacity to stay at about 45,000, but with the ability to expand by maybe 5,000 on a temporary basis and the potential to add 10,000 to 15,000 permanent seats, if needed, in an aesthetically-pleasing way.
I'd love for them to break ground ASAP, too, but I'd settle for some kind of announcement of a fund-raising/construction timeline in the next few months.
Agreed on the players mentioned above...I'd put their statues evenly spaced around the stadium. I would also incorporate a huge aquarium with live horned frogs somewhere into the facility.
Honestly, even as poor as I am, I'd plop down a few thousand bucks right now to see this happen.
I think we probably all want the exact same things. Box seats are a must.
I agree with Lyle that I'd like the capacity to stay the same with a few thousand seats available on an as-needed basis. The walk of legends is a great idea, with a place for both Patterson and LT. As for donations, I'd be willing to actually buy my own parking space rather than sharing one if these changes go into effect. Those things put a pretty serious hurt on my pocketbook as it is.
Agreed with everything above.
I could see TCU doing something more family involved as well like having a kids area that they can throw some footballs at some moving targets and such.
Think it would be cool to have all of the new seats purple, or would that just be overkill?
I like all these ideas, but i would really like for the endzones to be changed to all purple or a purple and white checkerboard.
It would be smart to wait for conference re-alignments
If we jumped to the Big 12 (a wet dream since 96’) we would need 60K
UT would bring at least 20-30K – half of which attended UT-Arlington
Nebraska would bring 15K
Oklahoma – 20K (they brought 50K to the death star for BYU game)
A&M – 20K (somehow – they brought 40K to the death star for the Ark game)
Tech – 20K (kinda everywhere now that gonorrhea can’t kill you – think they brought 40K for Baylor at the death star)
OK State, Kansas, Kansas State –will bring a record number of jean shorts
If we average 35K tcu fans willing to see us play unlv or new mexico – then imagine how many more would come to see us play someone “real” – then add 10-20K due to above explanation
Purple and white checkerboard would be sharp.
Please do not lump KU in the jean shorts crowd. In all honesty you would see a good number of cargo shorts though.
I would love them to change the stadium now, but it would make more sense to wait until after realignment. But then again for how long we have already waited for that to happen who knows how long it will be until that happens.
Purple freaking endzones, that is all I care about.
An easily expandable stadium would be the only way to do it today....
An SMU type stadium (pretty much what has been proposed) would only prohibit us from having any big time team come play at Amon Carter in the future....
The Death Star has changed the landscape in DFW
Any premeire non-con matchup would head east to arlington - inlcuding teams that have already agreed to play us at home(LSU, Ark)
Easy to underestimate the Metroplex, but here are some staggering numbers
Cowboys Stadium attendence in 2009
Oklahoma/BYU - 75,437
Texas A&M/Arkansas - 71,872
Texas Tech/Baylor - 71,964
not to mention the higher ticket prices - meaning more money for everybody
With the death star 15 minutes away, why would anybody come to the proposed 40,000 seat Amon Carter stadium for a non-con matchup?
The stadium renovation probably needs to happen as soon as possible. Seating capacity needs to be no more than 40,000. I'm still not sold that the Big 12 needs or will want TCU. Outside of old SWC nostalgia, what does TCU bring to the Big 12? I believe TCU's allure rests with our DFW market ties for another conference and creating a pipeline to Texas football recruits. When conference realignments take place, nostalgia will not be considered. All TCU adds is another tough football game on the schedule and an excellent baseball program... not sure if the Big 12 wants either.
I don't think the big 12 would take us either....for the same reasons you mention
but, by limiting capacity you are limiting our abilty to lure ANY big time non conference match-up at Amon Carter
If Texas Tech and Baylor can put 70,000 in Arlington, then almost anybody can.
Death Star should factor into the stadium renovation/expansion discussion, no question
People filled up The Death Star because it's a ridiculous venue that people want to see. We wouldn't allot visiting teams to fit 20k+ in our home stadium. Priority would go to TCU fans, not the 20k ACC students Texas would drag along. We don't need a 60k person stadium until we can consistently fill the stadium at it's current capacity.
The days of big time OOC games at The Carter are over with.
Nobody in their right mind will play us at home with the Death Star 15 minutes down the road and the ability to turn it into a home crowd atmosphere for themselves.
I like the current plans of decreasing permanent capacity with the ability to expand if/when needed.
I wouldn't mind seeing us go to field turf either and putting in purple endzones.
Also think it would be great to have suites/box seating on the student side of the stadium and some sort of wrap-around concourse and/or club level.
I like how West Virginia has a wrap-around score/information board on the second deck of the stadium...legit.
Judging by my last trip to FW and seeing the plethora of Lambos and Maserattis cruising down Hulen, I think it's safe to say there's a little coin floating around these days. That being said, if you build it...they will come.
I've heard the next renovation is going to be the locker room and weight room. This needs to be done right in order to keep up in the "facilities arms race".
Definitely agree with groundbreaking for all of this ASAP.
I think it would be cool to either have a Walk of Legends or put a statue at each entrance to the stadium - the "LT Entrance" or "Bob Lilly Entrance" or maybe even the "Texas Hammer Entrance" if you want to get crazy.
Definitely need to add some banners or signs glorifying our past seasons/national titles.
The PA system and gameday production must be fixed...sound/quality/etc. Maybe it was just the pure euphoria that I was experiencing the night of the Utah game, but they for once got it right and every production should be modeled after that one....basically just play Sandstorm repeatedly.
I'd definitely put in my 10%.
I would like to see us move to all purple turf similar to Boise St. That way we can hide on our field...it basically the best idea on here bar none. If we could get 5 or 6 more of the fan blown wavy arm guys that would be pretty sweet too.

Here is your prototypical KU fan. No jorts but almost as good.
That link didn't work.

I like how the commenters hinted that all UT fans come from ACC or UTA... my work here is done!
I had a UTAer tell me the other day how happy she was that "they" went to the National Championship.
Forgive me, but when did the Mighty Mavs start playing football???
