While the snow-out of last weekend's series against Air Force probably helped the Frogs' RPI as they vie to host an NCAA Regional for the first time in program history, it also meant they lost three almost-certain victories as they fight for a 4th consecutive regular season MWC title. Also, because the weekend before that was their scheduled off-week from conference play, the 16th-ranked Frogs find themselves in the odd situation of having not played a conference game since April 5th.
They head to San Diego this weekend to face 19th-ranked San Diego State in the most important road series of the year. In the opener tonight (8:00pm on KTCU & The Mtn), they'll face the Aztecs' super ace Stephen Strasburg for the second time this year, this time in front of a sold-out Tony Gwynn Stadium crowd.
Strasburg's numbers are pretty unreal: he's 8-0 with a 1.28 ERA, opposing batters are batting just .186 against him and he strikes out nearly two batters every inning. In his last start against TCU, at Lupton Stadium on March 27th, he picked up the win, giving up two runs on just three hits in 8 innings of work and striking out 14 Horned Frogs. Although it should be noted that Ben Carruthers took him deep to lead off the bottom of the 1st.
Sophomore Sean Hoelscher (2-1) takes the mound for the Frogs tonight, while true freshman Kyle Winkler (3-0) gets the start in Game 2 (Saturday, 3:00pm). Schlossnagle has yet to name a starter for Game 3 (Sunday, 3:00pm).
