Frogs sweep Wichita State

The Frogs bounced back quite nicely from their Wednesday-evening loss to Baylor by sweeping Wichita State, a complete 180 from their 3 losses in Wichita last spring.

Things didn't look good Friday night, as the Frogs were down 5-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning, staring a second consecutive defeat straight in the eye. But Matt Vern tied the game at 5 with a 3-run bomb and Ben Carruthers doubled home Brance Rivera (who was pinch-running after a Corey Steglich double) to make it 6-5. True freshman Erik Miller then shut down the Shockers in the 9th to preserve the win. Saturday and Sunday's games weren't quite as close, with the Frogs winning by 9-4 and 12-3 scores.

The MVP of the weekend has to be Matt Vern. He went 5-9 on the weekend, homered in all three games, and added a double on Sunday. All together, he drove in 8 runs over the 3 games.

Baseball America now has TCU at #12, other polls should come out with their rankings later today. At least one ranking service,, has the Frogs #1 in their RPI rankings. To be 9-2 after the murderer's row schedule they've faced so far is pretty amazing.

This week the Frogs have 4 games on tap. First up is a chance for you Austin & San Antonio area Frog fans to watch them in action as they take on Texas State in San Marcos on Tuesday night. Then the Golden Gophers of Minnesota come to Fort Worth for a weekend series at Lupton.

A few other notables:
  • Through the first six home games of '09, the Frogs are averaging just over 2,400 fans per game. That's a 20% increase over '08, which was the best attendance year in school history.
  • The Mtn has announced their TV broadcast schedule for the '09 season (after it's already begun?). They'll televise the MWC Tournament and a whopping TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES. Neither of which include TCU. Absolute bullshit.
